Codgers Mountain Bike Park
The Codgers Mountain Bike Park is situated super close to the center of Nelson's Downtown and contains a wide range of mountain bike trails. The trail grades range from easy wide, well graded single track for beginners and families to enjoy all the way through to full on double black downhill trails best left to the experts. The trails are based around three hills, with the summits rising to approximately 400m giving an amazing view out of Nelson and the surrounding area, harbour and further afield.

The trails all start from Brook Street and are very well signposted, with carparking also available at the trail start (this is a residentail area and the parking does full up, so please be considerate where you park). Never being too far from the city, you can tailor your trip to take an hour or to take all day, with all trails signposted its an easy park to follow and the locals are very friendly and most only too happy to point you in the right direction.

Richmond Hills
The Mountain Bike trail network in Richmond Hills is a a more gentle place to ride, great you like fun with lots of flowing grade 3+ trails. Access to the park is made easily via Easeby Park, off Marlborough Cresent. From here the grade 3 climbing track takes you up to the main skid site from which most of the trails branch off. There is also fire road access from the end of Lodestone Road from which you can ride trails like Loadstone Gully, or Bermed Monster for some grade 3/4 descending trails.

OFF THE BEATEN PATH | GRADE 5 TRAILS
Peaking Ridge is one of the most talked about trails in Nelson, you'll hear chatter about this trail all around the country, from the highest point of the access road where single trail start to take you to the official start of Peaking Ridge is also the starting point of the 629 trail.

Before heading into any of the mountains in New Zealand, always be prepared for any eventualities. Riding in Nelson is no different, be sure to talk to local bike shops, gain information about current trail conditions and where to go. To find the trail start, head out the Maitai Valley road until the Smiths Ford Parking area. From here there is a track starting over the road follow this along and up the further down the road, until it meets the trail heading up the hill. From here you are on forestry roads to the top, there are a few twists and turns, so again please talk to the locals or get yourself a map to ensure you head in the correct direction.

Peaking Ridge Like all trails in Nelson this one starts with a grueling and unforgiving climb to up forestry access roads to the highest point from which the trail starts. This trail drops over 490m along a distance of 2.3km. The trails is technical native forest with loads of rocks, roots, drops and fast flowy sections of trail. Best left to those more advanced and confident riders! From the bottom of the trail you end up on the same trail that leads you back around the bottom of the hill.

629 The 629 trail starts in the same style as Peaking Ridge, in Native NZ woodlands, roots, rocks and steep technical sections. Cross the first access road and the native turns to forestry pine, and more open and fast trail to the bottom. Again being a grade 4 / 5 trail this one is best left to those confident mountain bikers.
