Section Waihi to Paeroa (24km): This spectacular section of the Hauraki Rail Trail forms part of the excellent Hauraki Rail Trail network. Following a retired rail network which incorporates a 1 km tunnel, train stations, retired gold mines, water falls, bridges and native bush this trail is a must do.

Cycle a single section in a day or cycle multiple sections over a couple of days.

LOGISTICS:

  • There are plenty of free car parks to start from.
  • Cycling one way and getting transport back is possible with the Sherpa Shuttle ($25 pp + $15 per bike, mininum $75 per group, PER SECTION). Or do this yourself with two cars.
  • The highest points are Waihi and Te Aroha so these make the best starting points.
  • There are bike hire shops available at each end of each section. Main shops are in Waihi or Thames. Adventure hire is able to drop off bikes (at a small cost) anywhere in the area although they can't transport people due to licensing.
