KAYAK TO RANGITOTO ISLAND
Set off from Auckland City over to Rangitoto Island from either the Orakei Bays (Okahu Bay, Mission Bay, or St Heliers Bay) or the North Shore. It's just a 2 hour paddle however it's easiest departing from St Heliers due to weather and distance.

Explore the the coast line and then jump out of your kayaks at Rangitoto to explore the island by foot. Summiting takes around 1 hour. There are beautiful views back over to the city and the islands around the Hauraki Gulf

Tips: Starting from St Heliers Bay is the best bet to protect from wind and weather, it means you can paddle in the shelter of Browns Island.

MISSION BAY AND THE ORAKEI BAYS
Taste kayaking with an hour or two kayak hire with family and friends. Missions Bay is a great starting point given it's easy access and calm beach. Then reward yourself with a drink or icecream at the many establishments nearby.

Variations:

  • If you want to extend your trip then you can explore the neighbouring Motutapu Island
  • Visit Browns Island

MANGAWHAI (NORTH AUCKLAND)
Explore the Mangawhai Estuary, Tomarata Lake or even the ocean on a calm day.

KAYAKING WITH CHILDREN: Ensure you hire a double kayak so that an adult can accompany each child. Generally children need to be 8years or older and able to swim.
