The Great Lake Trail

On the shores of Lake Taupo lies an epic mountain biking adventure.

2 - 3 days 71km
  • Highlights:
  • Water crossings by boat
  • Lookouts over the lake and mountain
  • Native bush
  • Volcanic Formations

DETAILS

The Great Lake Trail traverses some of the most remote areas of the lake shore on a stretch of land between Waihaha Bridge in the west to Whakaipo Bay in the north. A boat shuttle links the different sections of the trail, providing pick ups and drop offs from various picturesque bays along the trail. Booking in advance your bikes and shuttles is essential so that you can have a great time.

Section 1: Waihaha - Kotukutuku Landing (Western Side of the Lake) - This is a 30km ride which is classified as a grade 3 ride, which means that some experience on a bike will be useful. The track starts on the eastern side of the Waihaha Bridge and heads down the Waihaha River. This section is undulating and the only transport from Kotukutuku Landing is via the boat shuttle that must be prebooked. Ride amongst vast stands of Kamahi, through volcanic rock formations, past the intriguing Echo rock and descend down to Waihora Bay and Kotukutuku Landing.

Section 2: Orakau - Kawakawa Bay - Kinloch - The second section of this trail starts in Orakau where you follow the Orakau Stream through regenerating native bush and past Harakakeke (native flax) wetlands down towards Kawakawa Bay. You will ride across boardwalks, past waterfalls and over ravines as the trail makes its way down towards the lake shore (10.25km). You can organise to be picked up here if you wish and transported by boat back to Kinloch or you can continue around the Bays to Kinlock only another 9.25km of the grade 3 trail (19.5 km total).

Section 3: Kinloch - Whakaipo Bay - This third part of the Great Lake Taupo Trail is lovely and can be a quick 13km ride or add on the Headland Loop Track for a total of 22.5km. At the end of this section there is a reserve that you can camp in otherwise you will need to have arranged your shuttle back to Kinloch.

TRIPS - Check these out (at the top of the page) as these sort all the transport arrangements for you so that you can have a great time with no stress!
