The Waikato River Trail is a 103km long shared walking / cycling path that follows the Waikato River from Arapuni through to Atiamuri providing nice easily accessible sections to ride as smaller sections or for the more adventurous a long day out! The trail is described as being predominantly an intermediate grade 3 trail (60%) of a nice wide path, not too technical but still some skill and fitness required, 20% Grade 2 (easy for all to ride) and the remaining 20% grade 4 where both a higher level of skill and fitness will be needed (these sections can always be walked if needed).

Karapiro Section: Arapuni to Pokaiwhenua Bridge | 11.5km one way | Mostly grade 2 easy & short 3 intermediate sections | An easy 11.5km section of the Waikato River Trail. At the beginning of this section there is the opportunity to ride over the 150m long swing bridge perched some 50m above the river in full view of the spectacular Arapuni Hydro Dam. From here the trail follows the river downstream all the way to Lake Karapiro and along its shores to the end of the trail.

Arapuni Section: Arapuni to Waipapa Dam | 36km one way | Grade 4 advanced | A more advanced section of trail, this 36km stretch has more hills and some technical riding with tighter corners than the rest of the trail, pass through reserves full of bird life, lush native forest and views over the mighty Waikato River. The Mangarewa suspension bridge 42m above the stream is a highlight. This section does involve a short amount of road riding.

Waipapa Section: Waipapa Dam to Mangakino | 19km one way | Grade 3 intermediate | Another simple section of riding, following the blue markers which show the way to Lake Mangakino with several short steep hills to keep you on your toes!

Maraetai Section: Mangakino to Whakamaru Dam | 12km one way | Grade 2 easy | Possibly the simplest section of Waikato River Trail to ride with another incredible 70m suspension bridge, native forest and lake views this is a great option for a family day out.

Whakamaru Section: Whakamaru Dam to Atiamuri | 23.5km one way | Grade 3 intermediate | Some of the best scenery are left to last again with amazing dams to cross, views over the beautiful lakes and boardwalks through scenic wetlands taking you through to the finish area at Ongaroto Rd (just 100m off State Highway 1).
