DETAILS

Canoe/kayak the beautiful Whanganui River. With rapids, waterfalls, farmland and native bush this adventure has it all. You can camp in the New Zealand DOC campsites along your way or just go for a day!

The Whanganui River is classed as one of the great walks of New Zealand and suitable for most ages and skill levels. You start off paddling through farmland and rapids. After your first day the river will move towards the deep gorges, waterfalls, and bush.

The first few days are calm and very suitable for beginners. The latter part of the trip involves a few rapids however your first couple of days will develop the experience for beginners to enjoy it safely.

OPTIONS
Most people complete a 5 day trip however there are options for a 3 day or even a 1 day trip.

LOGISTICS

  • Bookings are required for huts and campsites. Freedom camping is not possible. This is the main reason you need to book the canoe trip well in advance (for a trip in Jan - March you'll need to book months in advance). Go here to book your accommodation. Operators can help recommend where to stay but you need to make (and pay for) the booking. Book online with DOC
  • You travel as your own group and stay at the DOC huts you desire. For water safety reasons Operators won't cater for people to go solo but they may be able to create a group of solo people if you're flexible with dates.
  • For safety reasons Operators are only able to put solo paddlers on if they have other people to do the same section on the same dates. So it's best you try to find someone to paddle with, otherwise the Operator will try and let you know when they have other paddlers.
  • There is no phone reception on the Whanganui River. In case of emergency, there are a few locations along the river with emergency radio or phone.
  • You'll get a long list of requirements from your Operator. Expect to bring things ranging from toilet paper to food and water.
