Bookings Essential

Leaving from Whakahoro, this three day trip moves through the river gorges with beautiful scenery and native wildlife in the Whanganui National Park.

The first day of this journey is not for the faint hearted, it takes just over an hour drive to the starting point at Whakahoro (leaving from Taumarunui Canoe Hire), put your boats in, then you have a 7 hour paddle to John Coull Hut (DOC Hut that you will need to book yourself). It can be too much for families or older people.

After staying in John Coull Hut the first night you then set out on your second day of adventure meandering through bush-covered hills heading towards your second nights stop at either a DOC campsite or the Tīeke Kāinga marae (these also need to be booked by you).

On the third day you will continue along the beautiful Whanganui River through the scenic gorge of the Manganui o te Ao River where it enters the Whanganui after its journey from the slopes of Mt Ruapehu. You will be welcomed to Pipiriki (pick up at 13:30) by a hot drink and home baking before being transported back to Taumarunui Canoe Hire.

Notes:

  • Upon booking confirmation you will be sent a list of required equipment for this trip. Please don't panic if you do not have the equipment, you can hire all the required equipment from us upon arrival for a small fee.
